Comrades,

Greetings! We had an amazing Mid-Winter Conference last week. I love gathering together and energizing each other to continue our mission of service to Michigan. A lot of great ideas were shared and resources spread to leadership to take back to their communities across the state. Congratulations to all the Voice of Democracy, Patriot's Pen and Teacher of the Year recipients recognized this past weekend as well!

Last weekend also held a fundraising gala to restore one of the 21st Infantry Regiment Civil War Battle Banners in Ionia, where $8,600 was raised to the restoration! Thank you to the leadership of VFW Posts 4646 and 12082 for taking on this project of preserving Michigan's military history.

On the note of history, February is Black History month. Our black brothers and sisters have a long and illustrious history of service to our nation. I encourage you to take a moment and read some of these incredible stories of our predecessors, fellow veterans and active service members.

As always, thank you for your continued service. You change lives by sharing resources and being a leader in your communities.

Ray Lopez, State Commander, VFW Department of Michigan

Civil War Flag Restoration Gala

Leadership from VFW Posts 4646 and 12082 held a gala January 26 to raise funds for the last known Civil War Flag still on Display in Michigan. The battle banner was carried by Michigan's 21st Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, and is in desperate need of repair. Medal of Honor Recipient Sammy Davis was the keynote speaker at the gala, with Modern Woodmen of America was a key support sponsor. $8,600 was raised at the event, bringing the total funds raised to $32,000 out of the $47,000 goal. The flag restoration project is part of the VFW Department of Michigan's fundraising priorities this year.
